Back and Neck Pain Treatment

Back and neck pain are common orthopedic concerns that can affect movement, posture, sleep, work, exercise, and normal daily activities. Pain may develop suddenly after an injury or gradually over time from posture, overuse, arthritis, muscle strain, disc-related changes, or wear and tear.

At Suwanee Orthopedic Care, Dr. Nader C. Ghazal evaluates many common causes of back and neck pain, including muscle strains, sprains, arthritis, stiffness, sciatica-type symptoms, pinched nerve-type symptoms, injury-related pain, and chronic or recurring spine-related discomfort.

Our office offers same-day appointments, walk-in availability, and on-site X-rays when needed, helping many patients receive answers and care recommendations in one convenient visit.

Understanding Back and Neck Pain

The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae, discs, joints, ligaments, muscles, and nerves that work together to support the body, protect the spinal cord, and allow movement. The neck, also known as the cervical spine, supports the head and helps with turning, bending, and posture. The lower back, also known as the lumbar spine, supports much of the body’s weight and plays a major role in bending, lifting, standing, and walking.

Back and neck pain can come from many different structures, including muscles, ligaments, joints, discs, nerves, or surrounding soft tissues. Pain may stay localized in the back or neck, or it may travel into the shoulder, arm, hip, buttock, or leg.

Some patients may notice stiffness, muscle spasms, limited range of motion, numbness, tingling, weakness, shooting pain, burning pain, or pain that worsens with sitting, standing, bending, lifting, or certain positions.

When Should You See a Doctor for Back or Neck Pain?

You should consider being evaluated if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent or worsening back or neck pain
  • Pain after a fall, accident, lift, twist, or injury
  • Pain that travels into the shoulder, arm, hip, buttock, or leg
  • Numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness
  • Difficulty standing, walking, bending, lifting, or turning the neck
  • Muscle spasms or significant stiffness
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or activity
  • Pain that interferes with work, sleep, exercise, or daily activity
  • Recurring back or neck pain that keeps returning
  • Concern for arthritis, disc-related pain, or nerve irritation
  • Limited range of motion
  • Pain that does not improve with rest or conservative care

On-Site X-Rays for Back and Neck Pain

When appropriate, Suwanee Orthopedic Care can perform on-site X-rays to help evaluate back and neck pain. X-rays may help identify arthritis, alignment changes, degenerative changes, bone spurs, fractures, disc space narrowing, and other orthopedic concerns.

Having X-rays available in the office allows many patients to get a clearer understanding of their condition without unnecessary delays.

CONDITIONS WE TREAT

Common Back and Neck Conditions We Evaluate

Back and neck pain can come from sudden injury, muscle strain, arthritis, posture-related stress, repetitive activity, nerve irritation, or wear and tear over time. Dr. Ghazal evaluates many back and neck concerns, including:

✓ Low back pain
✓ Neck pain
✓ Muscle strains and sprains
✓ Back spasms
✓ Neck stiffness
✓ Sciatica-type symptoms
✓ Pinched nerve-type symptoms
✓ Arthritis of the spine
✓ Degenerative disc-type changes
✓ Disc-related back or neck pain

✓ Pain after a fall, accident, or lifting injury
✓ Work-related or posture-related pain
✓ Sports-related back and neck injuries
✓ Numbness, tingling, or radiating pain
✓ Limited range of motion
✓ Chronic or recurring back and neck pain

Back Pain, Neck Pain, and Radiating Symptoms

Back and neck pain may remain in one area or may radiate into another part of the body. Neck-related symptoms may travel into the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers. Low back-related symptoms may travel into the hip, buttock, thigh, leg, or foot.

Radiating pain, numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness may suggest nerve irritation and should be properly evaluated. An orthopedic exam can help determine whether symptoms may be related to the spine, muscles, joints, discs, nerves, or another orthopedic condition.

Back and Neck Pain After Injury

Some back and neck pain begins after a specific event, such as a fall, car accident, lifting injury, sports injury, or sudden twist. Other pain may develop slowly from repetitive stress, posture, arthritis, or everyday wear and tear.

Even if pain seems mild at first, symptoms that worsen, keep returning, or interfere with normal activity should be evaluated. Early orthopedic assessment can help identify the likely cause of pain and guide the next appropriate step.

What to Expect During a Back or Neck Pain Visit

During your visit, Dr. Ghazal will review your symptoms, how long the pain has been present, whether an injury occurred, and which activities or positions make the pain better or worse. He will examine the affected area, assess range of motion, tenderness, strength, reflexes, nerve-related symptoms, posture, and function, and determine whether X-rays or additional imaging may be needed.

Because every back and neck condition is different, recommendations depend on your diagnosis, exam findings, imaging results, medical history, activity level, and recovery goals.
Our goal is to help identify the cause of your pain, explain your condition clearly, and recommend the next appropriate step for care.
