Elbow Pain Treatment

Elbow pain can make it difficult to lift, grip, push, pull, exercise, work, or perform normal daily activities. Because the elbow helps connect movement between the shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand, pain in this area can affect many everyday tasks.

At Suwanee Orthopedic Care, Dr. Nader C. Ghazal evaluates many common causes of elbow pain, including tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, bursitis, sprains, strains, fractures, sports injuries, overuse injuries, swelling, and injury-related elbow problems.

Our office offers same-day appointments, walk-in availability, on-site X-rays when needed, and bracing, splinting, or casting when appropriate, helping many patients receive answers and care recommendations in one convenient visit.

Understanding Elbow Pain

The elbow is a joint where the upper arm bone meets the two bones of the forearm. It allows the arm to bend, straighten, rotate, lift, grip, and support weight. The elbow also contains tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilage, nerves, and fluid-filled cushioning structures called bursae.

The location of your elbow pain can provide important clues about what may be causing your symptoms. Pain may occur on the outside of the elbow, often associated with tennis elbow-type symptoms; on the inside of the elbow, often associated with golfer’s elbow-type symptoms; at the back of the elbow, near the olecranon bursa; or deeper within the joint.

Elbow pain may develop suddenly after a fall, direct impact, lifting injury, sports injury, or accident. It may also develop gradually from repetitive gripping, lifting, throwing, typing, tool use, weightlifting, or overuse. Some patients may notice swelling, stiffness, weakness, tenderness, numbness, tingling, popping, limited range of motion, or pain with gripping.

When Should You See a Doctor for Elbow Pain?

You should consider being evaluated if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent or worsening elbow pain
  • Pain after a fall, lift, accident, or sports injury
  • Pain with gripping, lifting, pushing, or pulling
  • Pain on the inside or outside of the elbow
  • Swelling, bruising, warmth, or tenderness
  • Limited ability to bend or straighten the elbow
  • Weakness in the arm, wrist, or hand
  • Numbness or tingling into the forearm, hand, or fingers
  • Popping, catching, or locking
  • Pain that worsens with repetitive use
  • Concern for a sprain, strain, or fracture
  • Pain that interferes with work, sleep, exercise, or daily activity

On-Site X-Rays for Elbow Pain

When appropriate, Suwanee Orthopedic Care can perform on-site X-rays to help evaluate elbow pain. X-rays may help identify fractures, arthritis, bone spurs, joint alignment issues, dislocations, calcifications, and other orthopedic concerns.

Having X-rays available in the office allows many patients to get a clearer understanding of their condition without unnecessary delays.

Bracing, Splinting, and Casting for Elbow Injuries

Depending on the type and severity of the injury, elbow care may involve support or immobilization to help protect the injured area.

Suwanee Orthopedic Care provides bracing, splinting, and casting when appropriate. These options may help stabilize the elbow or surrounding joints, limit painful motion, reduce the risk of further injury, and support the healing process.

Because every condition is different, Dr. Ghazal will determine the appropriate form of support based on the injury location, exam findings, X-ray results, symptoms, swelling, stability, and overall treatment needs.

Elbow Pain with Gripping, Lifting, or Repetitive Use

Many patients notice elbow pain during specific activities, such as gripping, lifting, carrying, typing, using tools, playing tennis or golf, throwing, exercising, or weightlifting. These symptoms are often related to tendon irritation, overuse, inflammation, joint irritation, or injury-related changes.

Pain that keeps returning, worsens with activity, or causes weakness, swelling, numbness, tingling, catching, or limited motion should be properly evaluated. An orthopedic exam can help determine whether symptoms are coming from the tendons, ligaments, joint, bones, muscles, or nearby nerves.

What to Expect During an Elbow Pain Visit

During your visit, Dr. Ghazal will review your symptoms, how long the pain has been present, whether an injury occurred, and which activities make the pain better or worse. He will examine the elbow, assess range of motion, strength, tenderness, swelling, stability, nerve-related symptoms, grip function, and determine whether X-rays or additional imaging may be needed.

Because every elbow condition is different, recommendations depend on your diagnosis, exam findings, imaging results, medical history, activity level, and recovery goals.

Our goal is to help identify the cause of your elbow pain, explain your condition clearly, and recommend the next appropriate step for care.
